Old friends

They know everything about you, having experienced the biggest life changes by your side (puberty, teenage angst, acne, bad hairstyles, dreadful fashion moments, and all the romantic disasters and triumphs). Yet, they still love you. For better or worse.

Of course, one has the historical friendships that one maintains, but this post is about the true friendships that stand the tests of time, distance and all the other stuff.

Today, two of my oldest and closest friends from boarding school are with me. We go back some 30 years. Holy cow. From when we were in knee-high socks, blazers and ties through to today - mothers, wives and yet completely the same as we were all those years ago. Perhaps it's because we spent many years together aged 11-18, perhaps it's because we were so similar in character, who knows.

We have seen one another over the years, but sporadically and for fleeting moments only.

We know one another's families and in turn we know about their friends and families. It's a bit like a spider web, in the nicest possible way.

We look the same as we did in school, give or take a few laughter lines. We share the same memories. It's wonderful.

As I look at my dearest friends and their children, I'm reminded how bloody lucky I am.
